Master the Dutch language by avoiding common mistakes. In this article, we cover essential pitfalls, such as the d/t rules, the correct use of fixed prepositions, and proper word order.
Whether you are a beginner or looking to sharpen your skills, these practical tips and the handy ‘walk rule’ will help you write and speak flawless Dutch with greater confidence and precision.

This is the most common trap in Dutch. Should you write word or wordt? Vind or vindt? The rule is simple: in the present tense, you add -t to the verb if the subject is hij, zij, or het (he, she, or it).
Tip: Use the “loop rule.” Replace the verb with lopen (to walk). You’ll automatically hear if it needs a t at the end.
Many Dutch verbs come with a fixed preposition, such as wachten op (to wait for) or houden van (to love). A common mistake is using the wrong preposition, for example wachten voor instead of wachten op.
👉 Tip: Learn the preposition together with the verb. Don’t just learn ‘wachten’, but leren wachten op’.
You can make a list of common combinations to memorize them more easily.
In Dutch, the subject often comes after the verb, especially after an introductory word or in questions. The correct word order is: verb first, then the subject.
❌ Gisteren ik ben naar Utrecht gegaan.
✅ Gisteren ben ik naar Utrecht gegaan.
👉 Tip: Remember the basic structure. If the sentence doesn’t start with the subject, the subject usually comes right after the verb.
The difference between ‘weten’ and ‘kennen’ is tricky for many learners.
Weten: use it for facts and information: Ik weet het antwoord. (I know the answer.)
Kennen: use it for people, places, or things you are familiar with: Ik ken die man. (I know that man.)
👉 Tip: Think of the ‘person rule’. Use kennen for people, places, and things. Use weten for facts and information.
